Rather than viewing pain solely as an adversary to be masked or suppressed, it is more effective to treat it as a relationship that requires investment and understanding. Conditioning often teaches us that we must suffer when in pain or that our only goal should be to make it disappear as quickly as possible. However, by choosing to pause and observe the experience, we can move from a state of reaction to one of conscious response.
When pain is at its most intense, it can be difficult to function, let alone reflect. It is often more productive to wait until the immediate sensation has subsided to analyze the deeper message behind it. By asking what the body is expressing, we can identify not only what needs to be addressed on a physical level but also what adjustments may be necessary in our lives overall. When we approach pain with the intent to learn, the path forward and the necessary actions to take become much clearer.
