Case Study: Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Treatment with coMra Therapy
- Age: 71 years old
- Gender: Female
- Condition: Central retinal artery occlusion in left eye
Initial Symptoms (May 8, 2014)
- Sudden dark cloud over left eye with complete vision loss
- Partial clearing after a few days, turning into a pink cloud
- Complete loss of depth perception
- Extreme dizziness with eye or head movements
- Reduced color vision, especially red
- Overwhelmed in complex visual environments
- Poor eye coordination
Medical History
- Glaucoma
- Hypertension
- Thyroid problems
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Osteoporosis
- LASIK surgery in both eyes (many years ago)
Initial Examination (3 weeks after onset)
- Best corrected vision: 20/50 (with head turned left)
- Poor contrast sensitivity in right eye, unable to test left eye
- Impaired color vision in right eye, no color vision in left eye
- No stereopsis (3D vision)
- Using three different canes for walking
Treatment Protocol
- 6 sessions of coMra therapy, once a week
- Universal 1 protocol plus optic neuritis treatment:
- 2 minutes at the temple
- Scanning over eye, above and below
- 1 minute lateral aspect of each eye
- Through closed eyelid and eye in adduction
Results After First Treatment
- Significant improvement in balance and dizziness
- Vision in left eye improved from 20/30+2 to 20/40
Results After 6 Treatments
- Improved maneuverability, especially in tight spots
- Virtually no dizziness with eye movements
- Reduced visual overwhelm
- Rarely using cane, almost normal balance
- Improved eye coordination
- Visual acuity:
- Right eye: 20/25-1
- Left eye: 20/40
- Contrast sensitivity improved in both eyes
- Color vision significantly improved
- Stereopsis present (200 arc seconds)
One-Year Follow-up
- Ophthalmologist noted surprising lack of cellular degeneration
- Cloud still present but can be shifted
- Driving locally
- Visual acuity:
- Right eye: 20/30+2
- Left eye: 20/30-2
- Stereopsis improved to 160 arc seconds
Conclusion
- Visual improvements generally maintained
- Recommendation for continued coMra therapy for glaucoma management
This case study demonstrates the potential of coMra therapy in treating central retinal artery occlusion, showing significant improvements in vision, balance, and overall quality of life for the patient.
